An Open Letter to the International Olympic Committee: Prioritizing Athlete Well-Being During the Paris Olympics

To: Mr. Thomas Bach, President, International Olympic Committee

Dear Mr. Bach,

As we approach the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris, we urgently call on the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to improve the sleeping conditions for athletes. Reports indicate that athletes will be sleeping without air conditioning and on cardboard beds, while temperatures in Paris might reach up to 108°F (42°C). This is simply unacceptable. These measures, while aimed at reducing carbon emissions and promoting eco-friendly practices, are putting athletes’ sleep and performance at risk.

Why should we limit the potential of top athletes when it matters the most?

At Eight Sleep, we’ve conducted extensive research proving the importance of maintaining a stable and cool sleeping temperature for better sleep. Our studies show significant benefits, including increased heart rate variability (HRV), lower sleep heart rates, and enhanced deep sleep. These factors are crucial for optimal recovery and performance.

National federations, including those from the US and Australia, have voiced their concerns about the IOC’s decisions, with some being forced to bring their own AC units. While preserving the environment should remain a top priority, relying solely on air conditioning is an outdated approach. Hundreds of professional athletes and Olympians already trust Eight Sleep’s Pod to cool them down at night to optimize recovery and performance. Our data shows a 32% improvement in sleep quality. Imagine the positive impact this could have on more than 10,000 athletes at the Games.

Don’t just take our word for it. Ask any athlete using Eight Sleep’s Pod. Taylor Fritz is a prime example. Additionally, experts like Dr. Andrew Huberman, Dr. Matthew Walker, and Dr. Peter Attia have given our technology their stamp of approval. Quality sleep is crucial, and the IOC needs to prioritize athlete well-being.

We invite you to join us in exploring solutions to ensure athletes get the best chance to succeed while championing innovation for a sustainable and athlete-centric Olympics. The future of sports depends on it, and we shouldn’t have to compromise on either front.

Sincerely,

Matteo Franceschetti
CEO and Co-founder, Eight Sleep
